Architecture and fabrics unite in this innovative collaboration between Zinc Textile and Antwerp based studio Dieter Vander Velpen Architects, whose noteworthy portfolio spans bespoke projects across the globe. In this meeting of surface and structure, the rhythmic patterns of natural materials influenced the organic shapes and playful mix of tactile qualities, including velvets and jacquards that play with the contrast of matt and shine. Showcasing Zinc’s eclectic design language and Dieter Vander Velpen Architects contemporary edge, little importance is placed on everything matching but more on everything matters. Subtle nods to Zinc’s classic glam glimmer through the architecturally inspired designs that pay homage to the patterns found in marble, travertine, wood and sculptural shapes.
Inspired by the architectural landscape of Antwerp, Dieter hand sketched a neoclassical geometric of overlapping arches reminiscent of a Colosseum which was reinterpreted as a short-pile velvet. Woven in alternating directions, the pile plays with the light, creating a contrast of matt and shine that brings the Colisseo design to life.
‘We started this design from an architectural sketch, very neoclassical in style. The fabric is woven from one colour with the pile building the structure. Thanks to the way the pile is constructed you see different colours and shadows which gives it this three-dimensional effect.’ Dieter
